Re: PARTICIPATION OF EUROPEAN PARLIAMENTARIANS AS CANDIDATES IN THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
Vilnius 09 February 2011
Laws of Republic of Lithuania provide an opportunity to be candidates in municipal elections to its citizens.
The lists of the candidates for the municipal elections include the members of the European Parliament - Juozas Imbrasas, Valdemaras Tomachevskis and Viktoras Uspaskich. Such a fact is incomprehensible to a majority of Lithuanian electors and raises doubts whether the said persons, simultaneously with their activities in the European Parliament, will be able to show effective results of the activities and duly represent the electors in boards of municipalities as well. It is notable that the activities of municipal authorities are not of a less importance, as compared to the European Parliament or the Parliament of Republic of Lithuania: they require considerable time, efforts and devotion for duly representation of the electors.
In summer 2009, the above-mentioned members of the European Parliament arranged a huge agitation campaign and assured the Lithuanian electors that they will settle problems of extraordinary importance and benefit for Lithuania in the European Parliament. The said agitation campaign was financed by the state budget of Lithuania; in addition, it was considerably supported and encouraged by the parties of the said parliamentarians and their sponsors.
After one year and half of their activities in the European Parliament, they declare to Lithuanian electors that they will work much and sacrificially for the benefit of local municipalities and communities. However, the formed opinion tells that they in no case would refuse huge funds and services in European Parliament, as compared to salaries in Lithuania.
If the said members of the European Parliament really wish to serve to Lithuania, they should refuse their mandates of a member of the European Parliament as soon as possible.
If J. Imbrasas, V. Tomachevskis and V.Uspaskich do not intend to be involved in municipal activities and are only a bait for attracting the electors to ballot boxes by trick, such tactics is dishonest in respect of their electors, the Lithuanian people and members of the European Parliament.
Hereby we ask Lithuanian people to refuse voting for J. Imbrasas, V. Tomachevskis and V.Uspaskich as well as for the parties and blocks where the said Europarliamentarians are mentioned in the municipal elections.
In addition, we ask the European Parliament to discuss upon this issue at its nearest sitting and to decide the problem of confidence in the said parliamentarians and their reliability in the European Parliament.
